allison o’connor “the way i spend my time”

By michaeljdemeo

Allison O’Connor is a 22 year old photographer from Vancouver, Washington.   Vancouver is a suburb of Portland, Oregon where I live so I took notice.  Most of Allison’s photography is personal in nature and serves as her diary.  Allison just got back from studying in Japan.  Most of the photos in this post are from her time there.  She uses a Canon EOS Rebel K2 film camera that she bought on eBay for $60.  Allison also contributes to style & culture site The PBLKS.

This is her “sunday feature” on We Are Now In Space…

“Japan was always interesting. I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much time by myself before and I didn’t really mind it. I woke up early everyday, I tried to explore new places whenever I could, I spent a lot of time on trains and walking around. Because I was there as an exchange student I met people from all over the world and the conversations never ceased to be interesting. I miss it.”

“I love looking at the photography section of bookstores in Japan. There is always a huge section of photography magazines and books that are a good mix of informative and beautiful. I’d say the interest in photography seems similar to here. Half of the people carry a digital camera to take pictures of their everyday lives, their food, etc., and a lot of people carry film and toy cameras as well.”

“The photos document how I spend my time, so in that way they are auto-biographical. I like to go exploring and on adventures, and by keeping me more aware of my surroundings the camera helps me define that sense of place I am always so interested in.”

“I took photography in high school but until I got my film camera 6 months ago I was just using a small digital camera.
I like a lot of things about film. There are so many factors involved in the way it turns out – where I get it processed, what kind of film I use, etc. Digital looks much more like reality but film seems more emotive. I like not knowing how the shot I envisioned will turn out and the anticipation of seeing it when I pick up my film”

“The Publics is an emerging urban art and culture site and I guess I contribute images and ideas. As it says on the site, “Cultural Intelligence For a More Stylee Future.” Douglas Haddow, The PBLKS’ editor, usually suggested an idea (street art, particularly cool neighborhoods, etc.) and we come up with some way for me to document it photographically.”

Favorite photographers? “I particularly like Johanna Wallin, Mikhail Wassmer, Hasisi Park, and Dulce Pinzon”
